Happy Halloween!

I know it’s not exactly revolutionary to play Thriller on Halloween, but I’m feeling particularly conformist today. So enjoy, dance along, recite the Vincent Price monologue, and have a happy halloween!

Mad Money

Since this blog is fast becoming a showcase for anything with “Mad” in the title, I figured I might as well post the brand new trailer for the Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes comedy, “Mad Money.” Call me a sucker for a female-driven heist film, but I actually think this looks pretty fun!

Hey, Ted Danson, lookin’ good with the silver hair. So much better than the Just For Men look he’s been sporting.

My Dad is NOT Homeless!

I am sure you’re all painfully aware of the wildfires that are raging throughout Southern California right now. They’ve claimed hundreds of homes, including my father’s house, and a rental property of my mom’s. 500,000 people have been evacuated from San Diego alone, and many of these fires are at 0% containment.
I’m collecting food, clothing, blankets, anything you have and want to give to the evacuation and animal shelters in the area. If you have anything you want to donate, let me know and can coordinate a pick up.
If you’re not local, but still want to give, you can visit the following links:
Red Cross
Salvation Army
SPCALA

Even just your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
Thanks,
Megan

UPDATE: Due to the heroics of the Running Springs Fire Department and volunteers, we’ve just learned that my dad’s house is still standing! Despite impossible odds, the fire burned right up the house, split off into different directions, and then rejoined itself after passing my dad’s house. I can’t help but think it was thanks to all those prayers you guys sent up. Thank you for all your support and friendship during this difficult time!
The Slide Fire is still at 0% containment, and has been upgraded to the worst in the state. I am still collecting donations for the evacuees and displaced animals, and I encourage all of you to help in any way that you can. Even if it’s just more of those prayers — they really are effective!
Thank you!

Dumbledore’s Army Really More Like a White Party

Beyond flashing the audience at a recent press conference, JK Rowling also managed to add a little more fuel to the evangelicals’ book burning fire.

Responding to a question from a child about Dumbledore’s love life, Rowling hesitated and then revealed, “I always saw Dumbledore as gay.” Filling in a few more details, she said, “Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald…. Don’t forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore’s tragedy.”

I’m guessing the tragedy was not being gay in itself, but falling in love with an a-hole like Grindelwald. Oh Dumbledore. Men are nothing but trouble. Surely someone of your wisdom and (ahem) life experience knows that. Although, it does explain his unnatural interest in wandlore. I’m just sayin’.

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

There is a new Sweeney Todd trailer up! Johnny Depp! Alan Rickman! Tim Burton! So many exclamation points!

I didn’t even like the stage show, but I have a feeling this is going to be an amazing film, albeit a dark and gory one. I can’t wait to get the Ballad of Sweeney Todd stuck in my head again! Also, sidebar, that’s pretty much Johnny Depp’s voice now, right? Has anyone heard him speak with an American accent in the last five years? Anyone?

Feel Good Friday: Pre-Halloween Edition!

Did you feel that change in the weather this week? It’s starting to get colder, leaves are starting to turn (or so I hear), and I can practically smell the Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Lattes when I wake up in the morning. It’s officially autumn, and there are less than two weeks until Halloween!

This year I decided to do something a little different than my traditional pumpkin carving. I found some neato stencils on the Darfur Now myspace (if you’re not a friend already, Jesus is very very disappointed in you), and thought I might use them on a pumpkin. The results are awesome, socially conscious, and make me feel like I am saving the world, one pumpkin at a time. Wouldn’t it be amazing if neighborhood streets were lined with a real message this Halloween? Get yourself to a pumpkin patch and start carving!

Click here for the stencil I used, or here for an alternate version.
