Okay, as I may have mentioned before in this blog, Paris Hilton is an idiot. We all know this. But apparently GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) is just catching this newsbreak.
“The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today called on Paris Hilton to explain and apologize to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and African American communities for her use of anti-gay and racial slurs in a video that began circulating on the Web earlier this week.
‘When Paris Hilton utters these words into a camera, it creates a permanent record that — regardless of when it occurred and because it has been made public — she must bear responsibility for,” said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. “These are not frivolous words, and to use them as if they are gives tacit sanction to the racism and homophobia they engender. Hilton has an obligation to go on the record, explain herself, and publicly apologize to the LGBT and African American communities and all those offended by these slurs.’”
I am not going to post the video, because, well, I am afraid my blog might get herpes. But suffice it to say that it was Paris Hilton being a trash-talking idiot at some party, while people stood around and looked embarrassed, and her sister laughed hysterically. But the thing is, I am not sure GLAAD can clamor for an apology. This tape was never meant for release. It’s not like she pulled a Michael Richards and used racial slurs to try to make a buck, or shock audiences. She was just mouthing off to a nightvision camcorder (incidentally, probably the least disgusting thing she’s ever done in front of a camcorder). I agree that she is an idiot, and ignorant, and racist, and disgusting, and any other disparaging words you’d like to associate with her.
I just hate that we live in a society that, when one person says something offensive, all of a sudden we demand their apology to the world. I agree that what she said is “not frivolous words, and to use them as if they are gives tacit sanction to the racism and homophobia they engender.” But to say that she now has an “obligation to go on the record, explain herself, and publicly apologize to the LGBT and African American communities and all those offended by these slurs” is implying that you at one time had expectations that she was anything more than a waste of human life. I’m sorry, GLAAD, but seriously, get real.
